On October 21st this past week there was much hype about the movie "Back to the Future Part II." In the movie one of the main characters (Marty McFly: aka Michael J. Fox) travels to October 21, 2015, to save his children, who have yet to be born in the original movie from 1985 "Back to the Future." The movie showed viewers in 1989 a glimpse of the future including: skateboards that could hover without wheels, flying cars, and flat screen televisions - at least the film got one of these right!

Another historic thing happened this past week, it was National School Bus Safety Week. Unlike the movie in which the date October 21, 2015 happens only once, #NSBSW happens every year during the third week of October. This .........

There are many reasons to "love the bus" but the biggest reason is safety. According to the American School Bus Council some 480,000 school buses carry 25 million children each day to and from school. That is more than half of America’s schoolchildren!

Did you also know…

School buses keep cars off the road, decreasing both traffic congestion and fuel emissions. They keep an annual estimated 17.3 million cars off roads surrounding schools each morning. Every school bus = 36 cars.

Today’s school buses are tougher and more diligently maintained than ever before. School bus drivers receive special training in safety, security and medical procedures; undergo regular drug and alcohol testing; and receive ......

After studying and teaching the NYS School Transportation Safety Refresher on wellness I decided it was time for me to make healthier choices. Here I was, telling school bus drivers and monitors about the importance of having a healthy safety attitude (such as drinking more water, getting enough rest, and walking at least 15 minutes a day) and yet I was lacking in those myself. Sure, I get enough rest, but drinking 64 ounces of water a day or walking daily was not at the top of my list. So I decided to start drinking and get moving!

This morning I was out for a walk around my neighborhood when I noticed a big yellow school bus picking-up children. As I watched the driver activate their yellow warning lights and turn on their red flashers, .........

This week, October 20-24, is National School Bus Safety Week. It is a public education program designed to promote school bus safety. In the early 1990’s, the National Association for Pupil Transportation (www.napt.org), the National School Transportation Association (www.schooltrans.com) and the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services (www.nasdpts.org) joined forces to form the National School Bus Safety Week Committee and coordinate School Bus Safety Week activities throughout the country. The members of the committee, joined by several other sponsors, have designated the third week in October each year as National School Bus Safety Week.

The centerpiece of National School Bus Safety Week is the .........

When getting ready for back to school time, focus is often on shopping for new clothes, school supplies, and backpacks. We usually don't think about preparing children to ride the school bus or how our morning commute will change until it is the first day of school. As a school bus driver for over 15 years and a certified New York State School Bus Driver Instructor, I would like to share with you why your kids should ride the school bus and how you can help teach children to have a safe bus ride.

Did you know the school bus is the safest mode of transportation for any age child? Here are some facts you should know from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • School buses are designed to be safer than passenger vehicles ...

Have you ever considered becoming a school bus driver? There can be many perks to driving the yellow bus such as: having the summer off, personal time in-between morning and afternoon runs, a chance to visit new places when taking students on field trips, and being part of a team on athletic trips. Many school transportation employers even offer benefits such as insurance, retirement, and paid holidays. What's not to like?

But becoming a school bus driver is not just simply filling out an application, taking a driving test and you're ready to go. There are many steps to go through before you are even allowed to pick-up your first passenger. In many states you will need to be fingerprinted, have a physical, apply for a CDL license, ...

Ahhh, summertime…. A time for outdoor picnics, fishing, parades, and fireworks! A time when many school children are on summer vacation taking a break from the classroom. Even though the "regular" school year may be over, as a community we need to be aware there are still buses transporting children to and from summer school, activity trips, and community events.

2014 is the 75th year anniversary of one of the most recognizable colors known as national school bus chrome. Frank Cyr, an educator who helped to organize the first national standards conference of school transportation in 1939, proposed all school buses nationwide be the same color: national school bus chrome. Thanks to this important milestone we have learned .........

How does being healthy influence safety? Eating healthy can give you more energy. Taking care of ourselves can give us a better attitude. Stress management may be very useful in helping you retain your health and sanity to remain a safe and productive employee.

It is important for school bus drivers and monitors to be alert and mindful to the choices we make. School transportation can be full of surprises, we may be asked to do an extra-trip in the morning or fill-in for an extra route in the afternoon. Either way, carrying healthy snacks such as a cheese stick and a few crackers, a homemade trailmix snack pak (such as a few almonds and dried fruit), or even one of those prepackaged single serve snack bags can help you to maintain energy .........
